Dear Tag Exchange Writer or Artist,

Hi! It’s so nice to (virtually) meet you. :) Thanks so much for taking the time to create something for me; I really hope you have fun with it!

To give you an idea of what I like and don’t like, I’m going to write a bit here about my general tastes, as well as some more specific thoughts about each fandom. I know it’s a lot, so please don’t feel like you have to include all, or even half of it! My interests are fairly broad, and I’m hoping to give you at least a few different directions you could go.

Now, you may notice that I have more to say about some fandoms, characters, ships, or tags than others, but that doesn’t mean I love them more. All the things I requested here are things that I would absolutely love to see! Some of them I’m just better at babbling about.

A special note if you’re creating fanart:
Most of my details are probably geared a bit towards fanfic, simply because that’s the world I’m personally familiar with. But I would definitely love fanart just as much! To (hopefully) even things out, I’ve added some fanart-specific info as to my Likes and DNWs (though most of both should apply to art as well as fic), and some notes about what I like visually for each fandom. I’ve also tried to make sure my ramblings for each of the tags (save obvious exceptions like Language-Based Humor) are open enough to be a prompt for both fic and art… but I’m a novice at this, so feedback is very welcome!

Some general things that didn’t quite fit into the Likes/DNWs dichotomy:

  • I like first person POV. Not necessarily more than I like third person POV, but in case you’d like to write in first person and were hesitant because some people don’t enjoy that: Don’t worry, I do!

  • The same goes for present tense and past tense: Write what you feel like; I like and will enjoy both.

  • You know what? Just in general write whichever way you’re inspired to! Script format, second person, future tense, experimental… I’m a very curious person (heh) and I think I’d really enjoy seeing how new and unusual formats might play out. (Just please don’t go all Finnegans Wake, ‘k?)

  • I usually tend to prefer friendship among characters to hostility, but I don’t object to hostility categorically or anything, especially if there’s a good reason and/or a canon background for it.

  • Finally, if we matched on more than one tag, you’re more than welcome to combine them, if you feel like it! (Same goes for characters, in as far as that applies.)

Do Not Want

These things really aren’t my kind of thing, and I’d rather they didn’t appear in my gift fic. (Though that doesn’t mean I object to them on principle. I really don’t, with most of them.)

  • character death

  • unhappy endings (I don’t need perfect fairy tale endings or anything, but I do like them to be at least hopeful.)

  • a lot of angst (a little is fine!)

  • gore/graphic violence

  • humiliation or serious embarrassment (seriously, I have such an embarrassment squick, please spare me)

  • an imbalance of power in romantic relationships (anything from teacher/student to D/s)

  • cheating (on a romantic partner)

  • the concepts of One True Love and destiny

  • PWP

  • non-canon ships (unless you know I ship them or at least don’t mind them)

  • too much introspection or navel-gazing (I have nothing against internal conflicts – in fact, I often love them! – but I like to see them reflected in a character’s actions, not just in their own thoughts.)

  • extremely crude/vulgar jokes/comments (unless it’s really in-character for the characters in question) (Er, to be clear, innuendo and the likes is totally fine! So is cursing! I just don’t like graphically disgusting imagery, especially if it’s meant to be degrading to another person.)

  • pregnancy and kidfic

  • uh, quite a lot of kinks? (I know that’s absurdly unspecific, but I’m often ridiculously easily squicked, so you’re best off not including any kinks at all. Or, if you have something specific in mind, feel free to ask me about it via mod!)

  • bashing any characters

  • shaming any characters for their appearance

Art Specific:

  • caricatures

  • flashing gifs

  • explicit porn

Likes

  • interactions between characters and closer looks at the dynamics of their relationship(s). Can be gen or shippy, I adore it either way, especially between characters who are at least to some degree fond of each other.

  • subtlety. I love it when I have to read a fic twice or really look closely at a piece of art to understand everything that’s going on and everything that’s implied.

  • atmosphere! Set up one (in the language, in the setting, in the coloring, in the anything at all honestly) that envelops me and transports me to the world and feel of the story, and I’ll love your work forever!

  • humor, especially wordplay and language-based humor. But also things like a third party stumbling upon a completely absurd situation, and visual gags both large and small.

  • surprises! I like the unexpected. It doesn’t need to be huge or shocking or anything, even just a little thing that I totally didn’t see coming is delightful.

  • playing with tropes. Invert them, subvert them, deconstruct them, whatever – anything other than playing them straight is always a fantastic kind of surprise! (Though of course there are a good few that I really love seeing played straight, as well, including all the ones in the tags I requested.)

  • psychological stories: stories about conflicts between people or within them, conflicts of world view or of personality, conflicts that prevent a relationship or conflicts within one, big conflicts or small ones, conflicts that are solvable, or even conflicts that aren’t. But most of all: stories about characters actively dealing with these conflicts, in whatever way works best (or, hey, worst, if that’s how you want this to play) for them.

  • explorations of queer themes. I really love seeing queerness from the POV of different characters, in different times throughout history, and/or in other universes. Or, hey, even just colorful-flag-waving celebrations of queerness! (Though I have to say, I prefer these kinds of works to be created by people who are queer themselves, so if you’re not, maybe go with something else.)

  • a deliberate use of language. I have a definite weakness for a somewhat poetic style of writing (if it suits the theme and the characters of a story), but I also love the clear prose of more plotty, or subject-oriented fic. Or, even more, maybe, when a character’s voice is so strong in a story that it’s immediately obvious in the choice of words and use of grammar. I just… language. ♥

  • And also of course all the tropes and things in the tags I requested! I’ve written a bit about each tag in the relevant fandom’s section.

Art Specific:

  • lighting. I love interestingly and/or unusually lit scenes, plays with light and shadow, that sort of thing. Seriously, I love it so, so much!

  • color schemes. This is kind of hard to explain, but basically, I like it when there’s a certain theme or tone to the colors, or when only a few different colors are used. (Kind of like the color palette memes that went around tumblr? Only maybe not with such radical colors/restrictions.) I tend to find that more visually interesting than “realistically” colored pictures.

  • underwater scenes. I just absolutely adore the colors, the way the light falls, and the beautiful otherworldly atmosphere of underwater pictures!

  • kissing. This one’s a simple one: I just really like seeing my OTPs kiss, and I don’t really get much of that in canon. ^^

Fandom: Cabin Pressure

Characters: Martin & Douglas & Carolyn & Arthur, Martin & Carolyn & Arthur, Douglas & Arthur, Douglas & Carolyn, Douglas & Herc

These’ll be short, because honestly, I just love everything about everyone! I can’t single anything out, this show is seriously just too perfect. ♥

Martin & Douglas & Carolyn & Arthur:

Not sure what to say here. I love the show, and the character dynamics of the show, and I’d love to see more of that!

Martin & Carolyn & Arthur:

Douglas is a pretty strong force in the group, on the one hand character-wise, always trying to get his way and rarely happy to compromise, and on the other hand in crisis situations where he tends to find the solutions and make the decisions. So I think it’d be really interesting to see how the absence of Douglas affects the dynamics of the other three. I really liked what we saw of that in Johannesburg, especially since it gave Martin a chance to shine. So let’s give Carolyn and Arthur the same opportunity!

Douglas & Arthur:

Douglas and Arthur didn’t get to interact all that much one-on-one (except for Uskerty, which I loved!), so I’d like to see some of that. I really like their father-son type relationship, and especially the way they slowly and naturally grew into it over the course of the seasons. And I always think it’s great when we get to see that there are a good few things that Douglas can actually learn from Arthur!

Douglas & Carolyn:

I just really like the way these two are. They’re both so competitive and proud and unwilling to admit that they care that it’s even more fantastic than usual when circumstances force them to openly cooperate and show more of themselves than they like to. So any situation like that would be wonderful! Or, any time they willingly join ranks against someone, they’re an incredible force to be reckoned with, and that’s just as delightful!

Douglas & Herc:

Now these two really intrigue me! They’re old friends, but they’re rivals. (For what, exactly?) They try to play each other, while knowing that they’re equally matched. And they’re hugely similar, which only makes the differences they do have stand out that much more. (Plus, of course, they’re both extremely witty, which makes all their interactions incredibly fun to listen to!)

I’d love to know what their history is. But also (and possibly even more), what their dynamics are in OJS! We got to see them interact plenty before, so we know how they like to snark and compete. But for one thing, the power dynamics have shifted now, and for another, they have to spend way more of their time together. It’d be fascinating to see where that leads!

  • AU – Actors: This could be such huge fun. Basically it would be taking a sitcom that’s done a lot with its setting and sticking it into a completely different setting full of endless new possibilities!

  • AU – Coffee Shop: Much like the Actor AU, I just see this as a great possibility for shenanigans and fun!

  • AU – Hogwarts: This is kind of weird and I actually have no idea how this might work out, but precisely that makes me incredibly curious! So go ahead do with this whatever you had in mind when you offered it; I’ll already love the sheer novelty.

  • Bodyswap: This is a weird one, for a show that takes place in our non-magical reality, but the comedy possibilities (and also the character-exploration ones) are just too fun to pass up! Feel free to run with this wherever your imagination takes you.

  • Getting Outed: I have nothing specific in mind here, I’m just curious. I could see any of these characters as queer, and I think it’d be interesting to see the character dynamics in response to someone getting outed.

  • Language-Based Humor: This is like fifty percent of what the show is, at least. And I love it so much more than I can say! So any way you want to use this would be awesome (and extra-super bonus points if you match the tone of the show!)

  • Magical Artifacts: I have no specific ideas in mind for this, I just thought it’d be a pleasingly random element(to borrow Douglas’ words) to add to the mix. Play this however you’re inspired to, I’d love to see it!

  • Mystery: I love mysteries! Not just the traditional crime-related ones, but really any kind at all. I always find it beautifully intriguing and just incredible fun not knowing at first what’s going on, trying to figure it out, and then being delightfully surprised and/or satisfied when everything falls into place.

  • Mind Reading: Because why not? It’s cool, and it makes character interactions all kinds of complicated in the most fascinating way!

  • Power Outage: Power outages are cool. (Erm, in fiction, I mean.) They take away people’s usual methods of navigating pretty much anything, make them improvise, and slow everything down. And, by making an otherwise familiar environment partly alien, they create a beautifully mixed atmosphere. Watching characters having to cope with that is just absolutely wonderful! (And visually, flashlights or candles in the dark and the likes are just gorgeous!)

  • Post-Canon: This setting would be great because it’s so very unknown. So much to explore! I’m incredibly curious about OJS and how the character dynamics have changed with the addition of Herc. And also, of course, how Martin is doing with Swiss Air, and how he might keep in contact with the group formerly known as MJN… Or maybe what this airline now looks like to new clients? (I’d prefer the fic not to be set in the far future, though, not more than a few years after the finale.)

  • Snowed In: It doesn’t need to involve literal snow (though that’s always cozy), I just want the characters to be trapped together for a while in a space they can more or less comfortably live in. Because character interaction, yay! (So think ‘grounded in a tiny, isolated airport due to weather’, not ‘crash-landed on a mountain.’)

  • Undercover as a Couple: I don’t ship anyone in Cabin Pressure, but when I saw this tag I had a sudden vision of Douglas and Herc having to pretend to be a couple for some bizarre reason (obviously pulling it off with their usual suavity), and hating every minute of it… so that could be fun!

*

Some General Notes:

  • I’m here for the humor, the character interactions, the glorious adventures, and the found family. But I love these characters so much that I’ll follow them pretty much wherever you want to take them!

  • That being said…

  • I prefer it when our main characters are nice to each other. Friendly teasing is fine (and so often great fun!), but I tend to get uncomfortable when it crosses the line into truly mean-spirited.

  • I don’t ship anyone in this show, so I’d prefer gen. Having Martin and Theresa and/or Carolyn and Herc be a couple is more than fine, I’d just rather not have romance be the main focus.

  • In general, I really like the tone and setting of the show, but if you want to take it in a different direction or into an AU, I’m happily (eagerly, even!) open to being surprised!

  • I’m happy to have anything be set anywhere in MJN’s (or OJS’s) timeline! My absolute favorite dynamics, though, are probably those of series four, where our core four have gotten really close, and are mostly united against outside forces.

  • I enjoy both script format and normal story format, and I’m happy to read experimental things, too!

  • In terms of art, I get to actually see these characters so, so rarely, that honestly pretty much anything would completely delight me!

  • But if you’re looking for a slightly more specific art-ish prompt… I think a cartoony-style works really, really well for this show.

  • And, much more specifically (in case that’s helpful to you), I think I’d enjoy a scene where there’s a lot going on, and/or the characters are in the middle of doing something weird!

Fandom: Community

Characters/Pairings: Abed Nadir, Troy/Abed, Annie Edison, Britta Perry, Frankie Dart

About the Season Six finale: I’m not sure what to make of it, so I’m just going to ignore it. If you want to use it as a jumping-off point or something, you’re welcome to! But I personally am withholding judgment (and with that, all interpretations and headcanons) until I know where it’s leading.

Abed:

Abed. I love him, I’m fascinated by him, and I’m worried by him. There’s a lot of darkness there with him, and I don’t (just) mean the obvious things when he’s clearly messed up (like trying to cut off Jeff’s arm), but the callous things he does out of selfishness, despite knowing they will hurt his friends. Like, for example, catfishing Annie so he’d get pancakes.

It’s not that his selfish side is really any worse than anyone else’s, but during some of those moments, he straight up doesn’t seem to care at all that he’s hurting people. And I don’t really know what to make of that.

I’d enjoy a story about that having consequences of some sort. After all, if you hurt your friends, they’re going to react to that. (Usually. If it doesn’t just so happen to be revealed among a huge pile of everyone’s secrets that you all make a pact to forget about…) And since, unlike most of the others, Abed never really had an arc about having to adapt his behavior for the sake of having friends, that’s something that’d be very interesting. Or, taking a different route, I’d also be intrigued by seeing him pushed further in that direction, and the truly dark places that could lead.

Now switching subjects abruptly (but not quite completely), I also really like his view of the world through the lens of film/TV tropes and references. And his simulations of his friends in the dreamatorium! Both are just endlessly fascinating to me, and I’d love to see more of them. (Or just adventures in the dreamatorium in general, possibly involving not-quite-willing participants.) I’d be particularly interested, I think, in Abed’s view of Troy, contrasted with his view of the others, since he arguably knows Troy and lot better and might have a harder time taking an outsider POV there.

Thinking of the most recent seasons, I have to say, it’s been very cool to watch him grow and change some now that Troy isn’t around anymore. I mean, it’s a bit whiplash-y, frankly, the way he’s swinging back and forth between being totally in reality and totally disconnected from it, but I’m fascinated by it. I just wish the show had explored the implications of that further, rather than just playing it for laughs. Especially the parts where he gets closer to the other members of the group – that’s an aspect I really like.

Troy/Abed:

One of my favorite things about Community! I love their friendship, the way they learned to accept and like each other exactly the way they are and for the way they are. I love the way they almost complete each other, and so often live in a world of their own. I love the sweetness of their friendship, but also the fact that they do have conflicts. And that when they do, the way they solve them is not so magnificently nonviolently, whether it’s by actually talking it out (like in 3x11 “Contemporary Impressionists”), or with the most harmless epic battle ever (like in 3x14 “Pillows and Blankets”).

That probably relates to another thing I adore: the way Troy grew out of – and Abed never had – any need for macho posturing. They are what they are and they don’t let what other people think of them or their relationship bother them – it’s really great to see!

Now, apart from the obvious fights, we never really get to see the inner workings of their relationship. Usually it’s Troy-and-Abed, as a united front, or one unit, interacting with other people or a situation. So I’d kind of really like to see what goes on behind that, when it’s just the two of them.

As for the romantic aspects of their relationship, I see them as really just adding a little bit extra to the strong friendship that’s already there, rather than changing it. So whether you think they hadn’t gotten round to that step yet when Troy left, or whether you see them as having been secretly (or not-so-secretly) together for a while already, either interpretation works for me!

Annie:

With Annie, I really like her ambitious, rule-following, model-student side, and how that interacts and clashes with the general Greendale environment. But I also love seeing her driven to break rules, following her ambition in a darker direction, and what it is that can drive her to it.

Another thing I enjoy, and I wish we’d gotten to see more of on the show, is her sharing an apartment with Troy and Abed. Whether it’s big drama, high hijinks, or quiet moments in between, I’d love a look at the adventures they had and the balance they found with each other.

Much the same goes for Annie’s friendship with Britta. There aren’t all that many moments of just the two of them doing things together as friends, instead of as rivals, so it’d be really nice to see some of that!

Alternatively, I think it would be a lot of fun to see her meticulously organizing something less-than-above-ground!

Britta:

Britta is such a wonderful character – or, at least, she has the potential to be, though that isn’t always used well.

I love her passion for justice and her compassion for others, and I like explorations of her dedication, her (often petty) pride, her inner conflicts and self-worth issues.

I’m not a fan of the way she was dumbed down in later seasons, or how she’s the worst at everything. So maybe show me something she’s good at – like bartending, according to 6x07 (“Advanced Safety Features”), or, hell, even flower arranging, if you can make that work in a story. Or show her and someone else (or several someone elses) from the group being friends, and actually enjoying each other’s company.

On the other hand, if you want to take a darker route, I’d be intrigued by a view of how Greendale changed her, how she went from the grounded, experienced activist she was in the first season to the ignorant, useless annoyance she’s often presented as in later seasons. (And how, just maybe, she’s slowing coming back a bit?)

(Or, on a random specific note, I’ve always wondered how it might play out if Britta fell for a girl. (I’m not thinking of Annie here, but probably an OFC.) The idea just intrigues me, somehow. Probably because Britta’s got some internalized homophobia to work through, and hey, what better catalyst could there be?)

The main thing is, though, whatever you write or draw, just please treat her as character, not a caricature.

Frankie:

Frankie is so great, seriously, I’ve loved her since almost the first time we saw her. I adore how she’s basically a real/non-sitcom person dumped suddenly into a sitcom – but then there’s those moments, like her interview in 6x01 (“Ladders”) that show that yeah, she actually does belong there, and those are fantastic, too. She’s new to everything at Greendale, and seeing her basically outsider-POV is so much fun! I’d love to see more of it, just her perspective on and reactions to the people, the system, the shenanigans.

In terms of her character, I particularly love her compassion, like in the way she immediately offered to help Britta in 6x02 ("Lawnmower Maintenance and Postnatal Care"), and can’t help but comfort the Dean in 6x07 (“Advanced Safely Features”). I’d like to see more of that side of her, though not necessarily exclusively.

Her efficiency is another thing I’m really taken with, and I would really enjoy seeing it in action, up against Greendale being Greendale. I always feel like that must be an incredibly epic battle, just going on there behind the scenes.

Lastly, I take her comments in 6x04 (“Queer Studies and Advanced Waxing”) to mean that she’s queer. You don’t need to focus on that, or even mention it at all, but just please don’t write her as straight. Thanks!

  • Asexual Romance: I can totally see this as being Troy and Abed’s relationship! Whether they’re asexual, or it’s just their relationship that is (or anything in between), this is something I’d really enjoy seeing explored or represented.

  • AU – Actors: I have nothing particular in mind here, I just think this could be a lot of fun! So I’ll leave all the specifics up to your imagination. :)

  • AU – Hogwarts: I don’t have any particular wishes for this here, either. The idea just seemed to beautifully weird (and weirdly beautiful) to pass up!

  • Bodyswap: I enjoy this trope a lot, and even more so when it’s played in ways I haven’t seen before. “Basic Human Anatomy” (4x11) used it really nicely, IMO, but left so many other versions open to explore. Like, what if it happened for real? And/or to other people?

  • Friends to Lovers: One of my all-time favorite things! (Intended for Troy/Abed, obviously, since that’s my only ship here.)

  • Getting Outed: This is another thing where I have nothing specific in mind. I can see any one of these characters as queer, and a thousand different directions this might go. I’m just really curious about he possibilities!

  • Handcuffed Together: Always such a fun way to force people to interact, and to let another person into their lives – physically! I love all the things this can result in, from wild shenanigans to emotional confrontations.

  • Heroes to Villains: All these characters have fairly dark dark sides to them that they’ve shown on more than one occasion. (Is there anyone left who hasn’t come close to killing someone?) I find that incredibly intriguing, and would love to see that explored further. (And if you set it, say, in one of the other timelines or something similarly obviously non-canon, I’d even exempt this from my ban on unhappy endings. (Though preferably still avoid making me cry too much, okay?))

  • Internalized Homophobia: Another thing I’m intrigued by and enjoy seeing explored. Could work for any of the characters, in various different ways.

  • Loss of Powers or Special Abilities: This is another one of those things that I just think could be cool. Pretty much everything about this is completely up to you. And if you’re wondering what powers or special abilities people in community have… no idea! Maybe it’s Jeff’s Winger-speeches, or Troy’s air conditioning repair powers? Or maybe Abed has secretly been able to read minds all along? Feel free to completely surprise me – I’ll love it!

  • Magical Creatures: No idea how or where they might fit in, I just think they might be cool. And, I mean, it’s not exactly hard to believe that there are unknown mysterious creatures lurking in Greendale, right?

  • Mind Reading: It’s a cool power! And, of course, a game-changer in pretty much any kind of character interaction. This could go lots of places, from funny to dark and anywhere in between – I’ll leave that up to you.

  • Murder Mystery: I adore this genre! I love mysteries in general, and I have a huge weakness for the Agatha-Christie-style murder mystery, with all its plotting and intrigue and gorgeous atmosphere and character insight…

  • Power Outage: Ooh, this always gives me shivers in a such a delightful way! It strips away so much of the world that everyone relies on without thinking, forces people to be creative and innovative, and can do so much to change competency dynamics, and I just love seeing characters thrust into that! Also, darkness. Darkness is creepy, or cozy, or many things in between, but it’s almost always more emotional than (day)light, and makes people drop their guard, or just plain strips them of it. I can’t get enough of it! (And visually, flashlights or candles in the dark and the likes are just gorgeous!)

  • POV Outsider: I love this way this shakes things up and makes you consider the characters and the world you’re so familiar with from a new perspective. But also the absolute hilarity that can ensue from outsiders misinterpreting (or, hey, correctly interpreting) situations they have no context for!

  • Quests: This totally sounds like a thing everyone here might go on! (Or be forced to go on, given that this is Greendale.) I don’t have anything more specific in mind for this, so surprise me!

  • Snowed In: No need to involve actual snow if you can find some other way to trap our characters together somewhere. Just please have it be a place they can more or less comfortably live for that time without being in danger. (Think ‘oh no our school is in a weird kind of Greendale-style lockdown’, not ‘help we’re trapped in this mountain cave in a snowstorm.’)

  • Undercover as a Couple: I love, love, love this as a romcom-y setup for get-together fic! And what with the way Troy and Abed play characters, there’s practically no limit to the situations they could be “undercover” in. (Uh, yeah, this is mainly a Troy/Abed thing. But hey, if you feel inspired to write this in a platonic way for some of the other characters, why not? Could be cool!)

  • Worldbuilding: I delight in the world of Greendale, with all its shenanigans, weirdness, and disconcerting darkness, and I’d love to see more of it! How about some Greendale classes we haven’t seen before? Or another campus-wide craze that takes over the school? Innocuous like the first blanket fort, insidious like paintball, dystopian like MeowMeowBeenz, or something else entirely? Or how about the administrative side of things? A world full of intrigue, corruption and manipulation, of which we’ve only seem a small part so far. (And which, for all we know, the Dean either secretly navigates disconcertingly competently every day, or fails completely at.) And higher up, there seems to be quite a lot of dangerous, secret military stuff? Which could take you in a really dark direction… that I’d be totally fascinated by!

*

Some General Notes:

  • I love this show in large part because of the relationships between the characters, so the more of them you have interacting with each other, the more awesome it is! (Though, actually, if you want to focus on just one character, that could be fascinating, too, so don’t let me stop you! I enjoy being surprised.)

  • You’re very welcome to include any and all non-nominated canon characters!

  • I don’t have any ships in this show besides Troy/Abed, and I love gen, but I don’t have any NOTPs I can think of, either. So if you want to include a different ship, go ahead, I’m curious! Just preferably don’t make it the sole focus.

  • No, smut, though, in this fandom, please. I’m just far more interested in other things, here.

  • On a more prompt-like note (that simply didn’t fit into any of the tags), I’m fascinated by the idea of the Gas Leak Year. I didn’t really like any of the episodes (except for 4x11 (“Basic Human Anatomy”)), but the concept that everyone was in an altered state of mind that whole year intrigues me. I’d love to see how that can be used to make season four make sense. Or give one of the episodes a backstory that makes it non-cringey to watch?

  • Or, taking it in a darker direction again, I can see it being really cool tracking everyone’s slowly altering state of mind as we move from the end of season three into season four?

  • Right, okay, moving on now.

  • Visually, I adore it when the whole campus commits to a theme and runs with it, from huge epic constructions down to tiny details (like with the blanket and pillow forts in 3x11 “Digital Exploration of Interior Design”).

  • (In fact, the pillow/blanket fort’s one of my favorite looks, I think. It’s just so cuddly!)

  • Or when the show itself is styled to match a particular genre. Those are so often so gorgeous!

  • Also, I love the dreamatorium look and effects! Dunno what it is about bright orange lines, but I find them awfully enchanting.

Fandom: MASH (TV)

Characters/Pairings: Hawkeye Pierce, Hawkeye/Trapper, Margaret Houlihan, Hawkeye Pierce & Margaret Houlihan, Father Mulcahy, Ginger Bayliss

Hawkeye:

I love Hawkeye. I love his sense of humor, his practicality, his sass, his ambiguous (performance of) sexuality (my headcanon is that he’s bisexual, but feel free to use your own interpretation), his campness, his sarcasm, his morality, his angst, and his perseverance. I love his willingness to admit to feelings and make himself vulnerable in complete disregard of the macho ideal of his time, and his willingness to care about others. And so much more.

He’s obviously not without his flaws – he can be righteous, selfish, and even cruel, he loses perspective of things, and he often lacks respect for women – but I think some of his best moments come from them, and when he’s made to realize or confront them.

Hawkeye/Trapper:

With Trapper, I love the way he’s more grounded, less likely to lose touch with reality completely, and generally less introspective. He complements Hawkeye that way. And while Trapper’s not unselfish, he is very driven to take care people (like the way he runs a kind of unofficial clinic for the locals in his free time) – seeing that side of him explored is one of my favorite things. He also conforms a bit more to social expectations (especially in performing masculinity and heterosexuality) than Hawkeye does, which is all kinds of intriguing (and also a good source of potential conflict between the two of them).

As for the rest… obviously I ship them, but I don’t see them as being a “true love” (i.e. “can’t be happy with anyone except each other”) kind of pairing – at least not during the war. I see it as a friendship-growing-into-something-more/slow burn kind of thing that definitely moves into romantic/sexual territory, but doesn’t get the chance (before Trapper goes home) to firmly establish itself there. Related to that, I also don’t imagine them as monogamous (again, at least not during the war), but as having their own thing that’s more or less separate from their dates with the nurses. (Though that, too, could easily be a source of tension and possibly unspoken conflict.)

Now, despite the impression you might have just gotten in the paragraph above, Hawkeye and Trapper are definitely approaching OTP-status with me. I want them to live happily ever after together. So I like to imagine them finding their way back to each other after the war, and making it work. If you’re more interested in writing that sort of thing, rather than anything set during the war, go for it! I’d love it.

For anything set during the war, my personal headcanon is that Hawkeye is bi, and fairly open about it, while Trapper is still coming to terms with his attraction to men. That being said, I have absolutely no problem with different interpretations!

Margaret:

Oh, Margaret, I love her so much more than I can say. I love her competence, her resilience, the way she demands the respect she deserves without backing down, her unapologetic army-ness, her compassion and her control of it. I love her fierce strength, but also her vulnerabilities: her panic in situations where there’s nothing she can do, her insecurities about not being feminine the way society expects of her, and the way she loves and wants to be loved so deeply that she leaves herself so very open to pain. And so much more.

Obviously she has flaws, most notably intolerance, but also unnecessary harshness, a (voluntary?) blindness towards the flaws in the people and systems she’s decided to devote herself to, a volatile temper, an attraction to power (over character or substance), and a lack of openness towards unconventional approaches. They’re part of what make her so compelling and so real to me.

I adore her most when she won’t take any crap from anyone, and when she’s the strong one in the group. But also, and possibly more, when she’s being so fiercely compassionate, and when she sees and concedes the value of different or original opinions or approaches. And also any time she lets someone in close enough to see her vulnerabilities.

…I adore her most of the time, really. (And just wish the writers had given her more of a fair shake, especially in the early seasons.)

Margaret & Hawkeye:

Margaret’s friendship with Hawkeye is also something I really enjoy seeing play out. I love the way they clash so much, personality-wise, but when Hawkeye shows Margaret some basic respect, and she shows him some basic tolerance, suddenly they suddenly fit together well and complement each other. And watching them slowly figure that out and work with it is just wonderful. I don’t ship them, and I can’t see them working out as a romantic couple at all, but the growth of their friendship is probably my absolute favorite development on the show.

Father Mulcahy:

How could I not love Father Mulcahy? He’s kind, he’s sweet, he’s quietly earnest, and he’s caring. He’s can be so very shy, quite innocent and a little bit bumbling, but both over and under that there’s a wonderful, subtle sense of humor! And a good bit of sly wit, too, sometimes - it’s one of my favorite things. And the moments when he manages to combine his earnestness with humor are honestly some of my favorites in the whole show! (For example: “Be good. And if you can’t be good, be careful.” ♥)

Beyond that, I like his optimism, his honest caring for other people, his often surprising insight, his willingness to question and/or subvert authority, his ability to improvise… there’s really nothing I can think of that I don’t like about Father Mulcahy. I just find him utterly lovable and charming!

I’d love to see more of him being part of any and all kinds of antiauthoritarian measures, whether they’re hijinks or genuine rebellious efforts. The plausible deniability he grabs at is great, but him being an active co-conspirator would be even better, I think.

Or, alternatively, I always find it very interesting to see him grapple with moral and religious questions, and theory versus (wartime) reality.

Ginger:

Give me anything at all about Ginger and I’ll be over the moon! I really liked what little we got to see of her (especially in 2x09 (“Dear Dad… Three”)), and kept waiting for her to be showcased more strongly when I watched those seasons the first time. And instead she just vanished. :(

So show me what her life is like at the 4077, who she’s friends with, how she does her job. Show her to me taking charge of a situation, or avoiding confrontation gracefully, or letting it all get to her and trying to cope. Have her interacting with the rest of the characters, or just doing her own thing. Tell me about who she was before the war, if you like, or who she becomes after it. Seriously, anything at all. ♥

  • AU – Actors: Something I think could be a lot of fun! I’m vaguely envisioning the main characters being actors working together on a movie or show or something, but I’ll leave everything else (e.g. When is it set? Fifties? Seventies? Today?) completely up to you!

  • AU – Hogwarts: Honestly? I don’t know, either. But I love M*A*S*H and I love Hogwarts, and the incredible weirdness of combining the two alone sounds very promising to me! (And tone-wise, it could work surprisingly – even heartbreakingly – well, what with moments of fun amid the darkness of war… But if you want to enjoy taking our characters out of the dismal war setting and just concentrate on schoolkid fun and shenanigans, I’d love that, too!)

  • Bodyswap: Whether it’s a real bodyswap (and with it, a genreswap), or the characters are just pretending, it holds the possibility for infinite hilarious hijinks!

  • Friends to Lovers: I tend to ship what I ship because the characters like each other a lot already, and I like the way they like each other. And want more of it. So this is an obvious one for me. (Only for Hawkeye/Trapper, obviously, since that’s my only ship here.)

  • Getting Together: Possibly my favorite thing in the world. I just really, really love that moment when all that tension finally gets resolved, and all the various ways that can happen. (Again just for Hawkeye/Trapper, here.)

  • Huddling for Warmth: Totally a thing that should have happened in canon! I mean, it’s the obvious solution to bitter cold winters, right? Anyway, I love this enjoy this trope both in romantic and platonic settings.

  • Language-Based Humor: A big part of the show, and a big part of what I love about the show! Honestly I’d read a fic that was one hundred percent witty wordplay and probably think it’s the best thing ever, I love it so much.

  • Mind-Reading: Could add a weird, but fascinating element to any and all interactions. I’m leaving this completely open, because frankly, I love the unpredictability what path these powers might take in this volatile setting. Surprise me!

  • Post-Canon: I have no headcanons of my own about what happens to everyone after the war, but I’m fascinated by all the possibilities. How can any one of them fit back into a “normal” life, especially in 1950s America? How do they cope? And do they stay in touch with each other in some way?

*

Some General Notes:

  • I honestly can’t stand the way the show played sexism and especially sexual assault (including forced kisses) for laughs. Please don’t do that.

  • All the other canon characters are more than welcome! I basically love everyone (at least as a character, if not for their personality *cough*Frank*cough*), and I really enjoy their fun and fascinating (and on occasion moving) interactions.

  • I have to say, I’m really not comfortable with the way Trapper treats Margaret a lot of the time. The early seasons were pretty terrible in their treatment of her, and all women, in general, but Trapper in particular seriously gave me the creeps at times. Especially in 3x15 (“Bombed”), where Margaret practically has to beg him not to sexually assault her! >.< So if you want to have them interact, I’m not against that, but tread carefully?

  • Art-specifically, this is another fandom I see so little art for that anything at all would be absolutely wonderful!

  • In terms of something slightly more specific, I quite like the muted colors of the show, with all the greens and browns and occasional white highlights.

  • I’m not terribly fond of the Hawaiian shirts, though.

  • But I do love the hand-painted signs!

Fandom: Starsky & Hutch

Characters: Starsky/Hutch

Starsky/Hutch:

Starsky and Hutch, oh man. I don’t even know where to start. I love them so, so much. Individually too, but above all together. I love the way they’re the absolute perfect team, the way they can practically read each other’s minds, and the way they always, always know they can rely on the other. I love the epic levels of trust there, and the way they can (and do!) let their guard down completely around each other.

I love the way they’re both full of feeling, and not afraid to admit it. Honestly, the degree to which they care – not just about each other, but about everyone else, too! – is just epic. They have such huge, incredible amounts of compassion, especially for the people on their beat, I don’t even know how to cope with that. Man.

But at the same time, they’re also not overwhelmed with it. They can let go and have fun, they can joke around and tease each other, or they can work together to relieve the pressure. There’s really not much of anything they don’t do together – their partnership covers pretty much all areas of their lives, and I love it!

And I love the way they love each other. (Platonically or romantically, I adore both – though I find the romantic kind just a bit more satisfying, which is why I’ve focused on that here). To me, they are the OTP to end all OTPs, simply because no one else can measure up. I just… no two other people love each other as much as these guys do. (Well, not in my fandoms, anyway.) And I can’t get enough of it!

As for things I particularly like to see… them touching, them teasing, them flirting, them communicating silently, them bantering, them talking… really just them being close in any which way. I love that. Not that it all has to be one hundred percent positive, though! Disagreeing, bickering, fighting, and anything along those lines is also absolutely welcome (and often a necessary plot element!), as long as their love still shines through in some way.

I’m really don’t know what else to say here; I’m just a babbling mess of incoherent feelings about these two at the moment. Sorry about that. But hey, if you offered this, you probably ship them already, and know yourself how perfect they are!

  • AU – Actors: I have no idea how this might work, but I think I’d really love to see it!

  • AU – College: This one comes with a slightly more specific idea (and what is possibly a twist), because I’d like Starsky and Hutch to be college professors, not students. That’s it, though – everything else about this is completely open to your imagination!

  • AU – Hogwarts: This one’s completely wide open again. Everything is up to you! I can sort of vaguely envision them as students, but also in a good bunch of other positions, and how these two incredibly different worlds might fit into each other I have no idea. Surprise me!

  • Bodyswap: I don’t have anything in particular in mind here, either, I just think this could take us for a wild and hilarious ride!

  • Friends to Lovers: Basically I love the way these two canonically love each other, and want there to be more of it.

  • Getting Together: Honestly probably one of my favorite things in the world. I just really, really love that moment when all that tension finally gets resolved, and all the various ways that can happen.

  • Mind-Reading: Yeah, okay, these guys pretty much already read each other’s minds to the point where this power is kind of superfluous – or at least not a game-changer. But whoever gets it could use it on others! Imagine how much easier investigations would go then. (And how much harder the paperwork is bound to be.) And, well, no one likes the idea of someone else being able to enter their head at any time, right? Even if it is their best friend. (Or, alternatively: This is their secret! They’ve actually been reading each other’s minds all along.)

  • Handcuffed Together: Given that these two are rarely apart anyway, I’m not sure how much it would change their interaction (…or how plausible it is for two cops to not be able to get out of handcuffs for a prolonged period of time…) but the small little effects it could have would make for a very fun fic anyway, I think!

  • Huddling for Warmth: Yeah, okay, I admit it, I love it when characters cuddle. But I also love the pre-getting-together ever-increasing tension. So how to combine them? By making cuddling a totally logical necessity! And come on, is there any fictional pair more likely to jump more willingly into cuddling— I mean huddling?

  • Internalized Homophobia: Frankly, I can’t imagine these two getting into a romantic relationship without having to confront at least a bit of internalized homophobia. Because the Seventies sucked that way. Obviously fics don’t need to focus on that, but I usually find it fascinating when they do. The way something so intangible, yet omnipresent, can affect anything from someone’s individual thought process over their relationship to their entire position in the world intrigues me incredibly. And Starsky and Hutch are such nuanced characters that they make a great base for exploring this.

  • Magical Plants: Yeah, I have no idea about this, either. But Hutch has a lot of plants! And one of the could be magic? Or something? Surprise me!

  • Magical Pants: Really, this one just looked like too much fun to pass up! Feel free to go with it wherever your imagination leads you. All I ask is that if you go with the British meaning of “pants,” you use an American term for them in the fic. Because I get thrown by linguistic disparities.

  • Post-Canon: I love post-SR fic! It leaves so much freedom in terms of deciding how things turned out, what our guys doing and where they are in life. I have a definite weakness for fics where Starsky didn’t return to the force, but I’m more than happy to read all kinds of interpretations! (I’d prefer, though, for the fic to be set no later than the Eighties. Just ‘cause, well, futurefic isn’t really my thing.)

  • Sharing a Bed: Oh no! There’s only one bed! Whatever will our guys do? …Given who they are and how they are with each other, share it without having any hangups about it, I imagine. But feel free to go with any scenario you’d like to imagine!

  • Snowed In: One of my all time favorite tropes! Though, honestly, I just want these guys trapped together, I don’t care if it’s by snow or other means as long as they’ve got a lot of time to waste and only each other to focus on. ^^ (But I’d prefer they weren’t all occupied with survival and stuff the whole time, so think more along the lines of ‘trapped by bad weather in a comfortably equipped cabin’, and not ‘besieged in an abandoned warehouse.’)

  • Undercover as a Couple: In this fandom, pretty much the only way for this to work is as Undercover in a Gay Bar. Which is actually great, because I love that trope! Oh, the romantic confusion! The sexual identity crisis! The “totally-necessary-for-our-cover” kisses!

*

Some General Notes:

  • I’m not a huge fan of hurt/comfort (I know, I know, what on earth am I doing in this fandom?), at least on a large scale. I just really hate having to watch characters I love suffer. It hurts! So, like, moderate amounts of h/c are totally fine, but please don’t have either of them badly injured/dangerously ill/severely suffering in some other way? My excessive empathy and sensitive soul thank you!

  • Also, I’m not all that fond of the times when Starsky & Hutch’s teasing and one-upmanship goes beyond friendly and into a more mean kind of territory. It’s fine if it’s part of a larger plot or character arc or something, but as a joke on its own I really don’t enjoy this kind of scene much.

  • Especially when women are concerned. I really can’t stand it when they treat a woman like a prize to be won and compete for her – I find that awful in every way. Please just don’t do anything like that.

  • With a hop and a skip to a happier note: I really like Kathy Marshall! We don’t get to see much of her, but what we do see about both her and her relationship with Starsky and Hutch is just wonderful. So if you want to including her, I’d love that!

  • Oh, speaking of which: Any and all other characters from the show are also welcome to make an appearance, of course!

  • Now, visually, I enjoy the Seventies aesthetic a lot! Especially, for some reason, the way everything seems to be some shade of brown.

  • Also, I think the Torino is quite pretty! (Sorry, Hutch.)

  • And some of the episodes/scenes are just incredibly gorgeously filmed! (2x14 “Bloodbath” and the chase scene at the end of 2x04 “Murder at Sea” are what come to mind immediately as an example.) I particularly like their use of lighting, color contrasts, and negative space, I think.

  • And in terms of a more specific (totally optional!) art prompt: I think I’d really like to see these two touching. Casually, lovingly, lightly, intensely… really any kind of touching would be great!

Fandom: Swingtown

Characters: Trina & Susan,Trina/Susan, Trina & Janet, Trina & Susan & Janet

Trina & Susan:

I love the way we got to watch these two start out with not much more than curiosity about each other, and then grow into real friends over the course of one short summer/season. There’s a beautiful kind of simplicity to that, as well as so much potential for future development.

It was great to see Trina trying to look out for Susan, kind of taking on a mentoring role, while still admiring and appreciating the different viewpoints Susan had to offer. And seeing Susan being introduced to Trina’s world, and being so incredibly open-minded and willing to engage and just basically growing immensely in front of our eyes was just fantastic! But I love that she didn’t let go of her own judgment, and instead evaluated everything on her own terms. That’s a huge part, I think, of why Trina and Susan still appear as equals, despite the imbalance in experience, and I adore that.

I also adore the fact that they just plain talk to each other, that they address problems and concerns and get them out into the open to try to solve them, and generally have such a great open and communicative approach. I so love to see that in relationships of any kind. And of course that makes it all the greater when they team to solve problems.

I’d love to see them doing more of that! (Well, I mean, I’d love to see them doing more of anything, frankly, given how little fic there is. But this would be my favorite thing.) Solving problems together, getting stuff done, being there for each other – and maybe managing husband-related issues? Or exploring more things! Whether it’s Trina introducing Susan to more aspects of her world, or both of them trying out something new together

Trina/Susan:

Basically this is everything I said about Trina & Susan above, plus UST. I mean, come one, the way Trina looks at Susan is practically an open invitation! And I like to think Susan is growing just open-minded enough to take her up on it. (Plus, of course, it sure doesn’t hurt that they seem to get along better with each other than with their respective husbands.)

I don’t see them as truly in love yet, given that, in the course of the short (oh god so short why was this amazing show cancelled WHY) show, they didn’t really have time to get to know each other well enough. To me it seems more like they would have budding feelings for each other on top of their growing friendship that may or may not turn into romantic love.

And in the mean time, there’s all that UST to explore! Which could be anything from hidden glances over shifting dynamics on their swinging nights to trying out a friends-with-benefits setup, or anything in between or beyond – whichever way you want to take this, I’ll be not just happy, but ridiculously excited!

Trina & Janet:

Their friendship is one I absolutely did not see coming, but I like it all the more for that.

It’s such a nice thing, two very different people finding common ground. I love the way they learned to look past their differences (and, let’s be honest, early-on nastiness) and grew into a sincere friendship. And also, the way it happened slowly, relatably, with both of them making concessions and learning not only to appreciate each other, but a lot about open-mindedness along the way!

The fact that their differences remain, and they manage to acknowledge and work around them, rather than erasing them, is another thing I really like. It gives their interactions such a grounded, believable feeling. And the fact that their friendship takes work, and they’re willing to put that work in, is honestly inspiring in a way.

I’d love to see them coming to understand each other even more – maybe sharing secrets, backstories, something like that? Or, hell, just having a few conversations. Anything that inches their friendship even further is absolutely great!

Trina & Susan & Janet:

I’m not sure what there’s left to say here that I didn’t say in the other groupings. I love all three of them, and I love the way they all grew to be friends. And especially the fact that they did it via compromises, empathy, and open-mindedness.

Now I want them to do all the things together! Just… all of them. Or any of them. (Though preferably with at least a bit of fun thrown in, because they deserve to have that.)

  • AU – Actors: I have no specific ideas about this, it just seems like it could be a lot of fun to play with. I happily leave the hows, wheres, whens, and whats up to!

  • AU – Hogwarts: Not a clue how this might work. Honestly, not the slightest. But that’s what makes it so fun!

  • Bodyswap: Bit weird, yeah, but could lead to wild amounts of fun and/or drama, right?

  • Courtship: I really like the idea of Trina (subtly? sneakily?) courting Susan. But if you want to turn this around or go another direction with it, I welcome surprises!

  • Deserted Streets: No idea how this might fit into the canon, but I like the atmospheric feel of it!

  • Friends with Benefits: I had this in mind for either Trina/Susan or Trina & Susan, I think, depending on what interpretation of this you go with. I’d very much love to see any and all versions of this! But I don’t see why it shouldn’t work for Trina & Janet or Trina & Susan & Janet, so if that’s what you’d prefer to write, do go ahead and surprise me!

  • Getting Together: My absolute favorite kind of shippy fic. I just really, really love that moment when all that tension finally gets resolved, and all the various ways that can happen! (Meant here for Trina/Susan, obviously.)

  • Mind Reading: Another weird one, I know. But I always enjoy what this does do character dynamics, and in a relationship tangle as full of secrets as this one, there are just infinite possibilities!

  • Mystery: I always enjoy mysteries a lot! Mysteries of all sizes and types! I love how it pulls me into a story when I don’t know what’s going on but desperately do want to know, and I have a lot of fun trying to put the pieces together. And I just adore it when they all snap together into a perfect solution at the end!

  • Road Trips: Honestly, I think I may just want the women to jump into a car and drive far, far away from the men. But I also love Road Trip Shenanigans, such as: Where Are We Going? Did You Even Bring a Map OMG? How Do You Have a Perfectly Packed Suitcase We Had Like Five Minutes’ Warning? Let’s Sing Along with the Radio! Oh No, Unexpected Car Trouble! And so, so much more! Basically just show me the girls having a great (or terrible, or ambivalent) time together on the road.

  • UST: Yeah, this one is meant for Trina/Susan. Because I can’t have been the only one who noticed the way Trina looked at Susan, right? I was so disappointed that the show never went there. So give me Trina looking at Susan, and Susan slowly but surely looking back and whatever happens from there on out and I’ll be the happiest fic reader ever!

*

Some General Notes:

  • Any and all of the non-nominated characters are very welcome!

  • This show being what it is, I’m lifting my DNW-ban on cheating on partners for this fandom.

  • One of the things I love most about this show is the maturity. Like, the way over-the-top soap-type-misunderstandings are set up… and then the characters recognize how irrelevant they are, dismiss them, and cut to the actual heart of the problem. And the way these characters address and try to solve problems by actually talking to each other. So if you’re writing fic, that’s one way to make me really happy. ^^

  • But I’m not wild about Trina’s pregnancy storyline, so I’d be happiest if you didn’t make that the central focus.

  • If you’re creating art, let me tell you how much I love the golden summer glow that suffuses everything on this show. So, so much!

  • The Seventies aesthetic is pretty fun, too.

  • And oh god are the women’s clothes gorgeous! ♥

Hello Calliatra, I'm so sorry to come here and talk about this so out of the blue! I just thought I would have let you know about the Starsky & Hutch gift exchange that is held on the SH mailing list me&thee, in the event you'd like to participate. Sign ups will close on Halloween day, but I can try to talk to Dawn if she can wait for you in the event you're interested to sign up, just let me know. You can find the mailing list at this link since you need to be a member of the list in order to participate to the exchange:

Hello again, sorry for being slow to reply back, I was at a convention (Lucca Comics and Games, it's so big and chaotic! I'm beat)

It's the same one indeed. :) I'm glad you're all set with Dawn's exchange already, I'm a member of the mailing list (though inactive for a while) but I didn't see you posting on there so I thought either you weren't able to sign up, or I was speaking to someone else on "certain anon spaces on the net". ;)

Mailing lists are very simple, (for example) 50 people are subscribed, 35 are lurkers (they only read but not participate, or participate on rare circumstances only), 15 are people who participate. All of them send their emails to the name-of-the-group@yahoogroups.com address (by pushing the 'reply' button on the received email from the mailing list/members of it) and they gets automatically sent to every member of the group. I'm bad at explain this... sorry!

To signup I think you need to motivate the reason of your signup (in order to not be confused with a spam bot, or a troll) and declaring your real age (underage kids aren't permitted to sign up because sometimes adult themes are talked about or adult fic shared).

To signup I clicked the 'join lovesmeandthee' button (you need a yahoo account) then I've sent an email to the list owner address where I stated motivations and age, then list mommy CC sent me an email with the rules, that I needed to reply back that I had read them, then CC accepted my subscription and I was in.

If you haven't a yahoo email and don't wish to get one, you can signup with a non-yahoo email by sending a blank email (important: it must have no text and no subject line, or it won't work) to loveofmeandthee-subscribe@yahoogroups.com . You still need emailing the list mom or it won't work anyway.

It has been a long while the last time I saw any messages from CC, that could mean she's on hiatus and won't reply back to you. My suggestion is to try to contact Dawn (dawnebeth on livejournal indeed) and ask for her assistance. Or I can do that for you, since I know her for a while.
